Why Organic Dermal Filler?

We tend to turn to green energy, natural food and organic produce lately. The need to be natural is understandable, especially when it comes to our health and beauty.

Many people who consider non-surgical face lift (or facial skin wrinkle treatment) are looking for the best non-surgical ways to improve the appearance of their skin.

Injectable fillers are the most common treatment option available for such cases, but for many people the risk of allergic reaction, lumping, bruising or other adverse effects is scary enough to abandon the idea altogether.

Modern dermal fillers are engineered in medical labs using complex chemicals, animal or plant products. Even though the resulting dermal fillers are "biocompatible" they are still foreign to the skin they are injected into, and may cause unwanted body response.

What would be the best dermal filler for skin wrinkle treatment?

Perhaps something that is so natural, it would not be considered foreign by the body.

Now it's time to introduce Selphyl® as the only dermal filler that is completely natural and even organic. The uniqueness of Selphyl® is in the material it is made of. It is the patient's own blood. A small amount of the patient's blood is taken, processed in a certain way and then the resulting filler is injected into the skin. The risk of having a reaction to Selphyl® is almost nonexistent, as we inject parts of the patient's own blood.

Selphyl® continues to work after the injection, speeding up the skin rejuvenation process, increasing the production of collagen and making the skin younger from the inside.

What is a Vampire Facelift®?

Blood is taken for long-lasting beauty...does this sound like a vampire business? It definitely does to the media, as they nicknamed Selphyl® a Vampire Filler. The procedure itself is called Vampire Facelift® and it consists of individually developed treatment plans and may include other modalities and injections tailored for a specific patient in order to achieve the best and most natural anti-aging effect.

Vampire Facelift® procedure is quick, takes a very short time and can be performed during your lunch hour. As it has virtually no side effects, Selphyl® can be used for anti wrinkle treatment on any part of the face - for eye wrinkles, lip wrinkles, marionette lines, smile lines and more. It is suitable for both women and men and has almost no contraindications. The effect is reported to last for up to 18 months.

Does Selphyl® work?

Yes, it does. The effects of Selphyl® have been shown in several lab studies which demonstrated an increase in volume and collagen production in the skin after Selphyl® injections. Those patients who had the Vampire Facelift® procedure done noticed a better complexion, increased skin tone and diminishing of wrinkles over time.

Artificial dermal fillers are designed to stay because the body breaks them down very slowly, so the cushion the fillers create diminishes gradually. That's why the effect from the fillers is the best right after injection but fades with time.

Selphyl® is different. It stays, goes and then comes back.

Fibrin matrix is created right after injection and patients see immediate results. This matrix is not foreign to the body, so the breakdown process is much faster than with artificial fillers, and usually completed within 2 to 4 weeks. This means that the original fibrin cushion is gone by the 4th week, and the effect may diminish.

The second important part of Selphyl® is concentrated platelets. They sit in the matrix and work very hard from the moment of injection till complete breakdown of the matrix. Platelets signal surrounding skin to make new cells, collagen and elastin fibers. By the time the matrix is gone, the skin switches to rejuvenation mode, producing more cells and increasing its volume and elasticity.

It is very important to understand, that the effects of Vampire Facelift® with Selphyl® are getting better with time. The correction from Vampire Facelift® appears in two waves. The first effect is seen immediately after treatment but it may fade within a couple of weeks because of fibrin matrix breakdown. The second wave is slower and becomes well-noticeable at around 2-3 months post-treatment, as skin rejuvenates itself.

Selphyl® works from the first injection. However, Dr. Robertus' experience shows that the best correction is achieved if the second treatment performed at the 3-month mark from the first injection.

How does Selphyl® work?

Selphyl® has been featured in numerous TV shows and news programs such as The Doctors, ET Canada and CBC News. These programs covered the basics of how Selphyl® works, but here you will find more detailed information about the way Selphyl® rejuvenates the skin.

Imagine what happens when you cut your finger. First, there is blood, then a clot, and then the wound heals by growing new skin and then finally it goes away. If you look at the clot under the microscope you will see a mesh of fibers in which many blood cells are trapped. Such mesh is made by the body to stop bleeding, but then platelets that sit in the mesh start making special chemicals that tell surrounding tissue to regenerate, or to build new cells and fibers.

The idea of directing platelets to begin the rejuvenation of tissues exactly where we need it led to the creation of the process used in Selphyl®. While Selphyl® is a new thing in cosmetic medicine, the technology has been used by doctors for more than a decade in areas like burns, injuries and sports medicine.

During Selphyl® preparation, platelets are concentrated in blood plasma first (centrifuge) and then the process of clotting is started. When injected, the plasma is still liquid, but in 10 minutesa  clot is formed with platelets sitting in it. That clot is called Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix, or PRFM. Most importantly, platelets do not die but continue doing what they are good for - producing biologically active rejuvenation chemicals, which tell the skin to produce young cells and more collagen.

The result is younger skin with fewer wrinkles and increased tone and elasticity. Selphyl® is the only system that allows TRULY NATURAL tissue regeneration using your body's own ability to rejuvenate and increase skin volume. Unlike artificial fillers, Vampire Facelift® procedure with Selphyl® turns skin biologically younger (not just makes it look younger).

What exactly is done during the procedure?

Taking the blood is the first part. Blood is drawn into a test tube, which looks like a regular blood-work test tube. For best coverage of full face it is recommended to use two tubes, but one may be sufficient for smaller areas.

After blood is drawn, it is spun in a centrifuge to separate plasma from red blood cells. The plasma is then transferred to another test tube where the filler is prepared. Then (within 10 minutes) the filler is injected in the problem areas of the skin.

Benefits of Selphyl®

Are There Any Side Effects Or Adverse Reactions?

Selphyl is a totally natural product as it is made from your own blood. The risk of adverse reactions or side effects to Selphyl is significantly lower than the risk of side effects for any other filler. It is good to remember that Selphyl injection is still a minor invasive procedure and most of the reactions and effects that can happen are from needle pricks themselves. Those reactions include puffiness and slight bruising. All reactions completely resolve within 1 to 3 days.

Are There Contraindications To Selphyl?

Contraindications to Selphyl are rare and include:
