What Fruits to Eat to Lose Weight?

Sugar cubes

Fruits are considered a very healthy food and, because of that, many people think that eating lots of fruits will make them to lose weight.  Unfortunately, this is a big misconception of "healthy foods".

We consider any food "healthy" not because it makes us lose weight, but because of some properties, like a great amount of vitamins, nutrients, fiber or any other ingredients that helps us to live healthier life.

Fruits are considered healthy because, in comparison to other sweets like cakes and pastries, they have less sugar but significantly more vitamins and fiber, which are good for you.  So, if you have a choice between a cake and a fruit, you should choose a fruit – it will be a healthy choice.

However, this choice will not make you lose weight as fruits are very sweet.  On average, a single medium-sized fruit, like a peach, a pear or a banana (not technically a fruit) contains an equivalent of about 4 teaspoons of sugar.  With some recommendations calling up to 12 servings of fruits per day, this amount of sugar will be enough to keep you going without losing weight for sure.

Dried fruits are even worse.  Most dried fruits available in stores are sweetened, which means that sugar or sugar syrup is added in the preparation process.  This makes dried fruits sweeter and tastier, but definitely not "healthier" or suitable for dieting.

Unfortunately, with all the benefits and nutrients packed in fruits, consuming a lot of them is not good for losing weight.

If you choose to eat fruits to control your weight, remember to not to take sugar from other sources, like candies, pastries, cakes, sweetened drinks and colas.  Also, choose the fruits that are less sweet and more chewy.  For example, prefer sour apples to grapes or bananas.  Selecting medium-sized or small fruits helps to control weight as well.  No diet will allow you to eat a lot of fruits, so remember that quantity is very important.

To make sure that you receive all the benefits of fruits without sugar, eat more green and leafy vegetables.  This way you will get all the vitamins and fiber you need but little or no sugar and starchDo not count potatoes as a vegetable though – it is very starchy and should be used sparingly.
